The Flying Whisk Bakery

The story behind the flying whisk

The Flying Whisk Bakery was founded by two classmates from the Denver Art Institute after an accident bonded them together.

During the summer of 2007, Kim and Jennifer decided to practice the art of spinning sugar at Jennifer's house. Foolishly wearing flip-flops and shorts, Kim and Jennifer began melting sugar in a saucepan while the kids played in the basement and the husbands tweaked the background music.

Working the sugar with a small black-handled whisk, crystals began to form. Sugar crystals ruin the spinning process, so Kim and Jennifer had to start over. They melted more sugar in another pan and selected a larger, top-heavy whisk. They loomed over the pan, watching and waiting for the sugar to melt.

As if propelled by an unseen force, the whisk flew out of the pan, spraying melted sugar across the kitchen. Clumps of 320-degree sugar landed on exposed arms, hands, and legs. Yelling and screaming ensued.

At first, each friend did not realize that the other had also been burned. After applying basic first aid and assessing the damage, a trip to the emergency room was in order. Kim and Jennifer both had second and third degree burns.

Kim’s husband drove the two injured women to the ER while Jennifer’s husband remained home with the kids. Kim and Jennifer walked sheepishly into the ER trying to explain the ordeal to the incredulous triage nurse. Discerning looks from hospital staff indicated that spinning sugar on a Saturday night wasn't fully understood.

After several large bandages, some lecturing from concerned husbands, talks about kitchen safety with the kids, and weeks of healing, the two mothers saw the event as a message. The Flying Whisk was born.
